how bitter & arrogant can you get

"win or lose, it's the school we choose."

this is what you can come up with after losing the championship which you predicted & bragged to be in the bag early on the eliminations?! talk about being a good sport?! tsk. tsk.

The thing is, the Ateneo did not just come up with that. It has been like that for ages (Where have you been all these years?). And it's not even about bitterness and arrogance; it's about choice -- how we'd choose to be in the Ateneo despite everything.

i know about that slogan for years. i have witnessed & observed the uaap cage wars for years. the question is, why hype it only now? after you lost to ust. the thing is, it sounds arrogant. at first glance, it seems that you guys are still apprehensive accepting defeat.

and why choose to be anonymous? it's ok to leave your name here. i wouldn't take it against you. all comments are welcome in my blog. thanks for visiting. =)

Actually, I don't really know why you're saying it's being hyped. It's a line from ADMU's alma mater song "A Song for Mary", which is traditionally sung after every game, outcome aside. Yes, it may sound arrogant, but I'm more inclined to say it's pride rather than arrogance. It's the epitome of "bloody but unbowed", and that makes it perfect as a war cry.

Of course, there may be those who still refuse to accept defeat (I'm not so sure how they `refuse`, well, since there's not really anything that can be done other than accept). But personally, I don't really mind. I believe (or wish, maybe) that most Ateneans feel the same way. It was a very good game 3; the score was tied at the very last minute. It's not bad at all. And besides, college stature isn't even dependent on championships won or lost. I think that's what the (in)famous line is trying to say. Something for people to think about, especially those who are so caught up with UAAP. I mean... there is more to college than a basketball league; there are dozens of other areas to excel in, and some of them infinitely more important than that.

point well taken jue. i agree with what you said about the latter part of your latest comment. there is more to college (or life) than a basketball league. but it's also a reality that students and alumnus will "fight" for school stature in basketball. we are living in a basketball crazy country after all. and i think that what makes college basketball interesting. it's all about love for school & pride.

you may not know it, but some are really, really hyping that slogan to the helm and some of your schoolmates have waaayyy toooo much school pride if you know what i mean. ;-) hehehe.

and that game 3 was a classic. it reminds me so much of the dlsu-ust championship game in '98 or '99. where dlsu won it in OT too.

again, thanks for commenting. and hope you visit here again.

Yea I know. Every college has its share of the die-hard UAAP types ;)

And thanks for hearing me out :) Just glad you're not one of those people who are way out of reason. Especially since those types are all over the net nowadays, what with the advent of personal blogs...

It was really nice conversing with you; I guess I'll keep you in my bookmarks :P

On a related note, I just saw this in my friend's blog :)

hehehe. i think that slogan should be re-phrased when talking about basketball. coz it has a different ring to it.

i'm a diehard UAAP basketball fan because i sooo love the sport. but i don't even cheer for my school sometimes because they can really suck. hahaha. i love college ball that's why i tend to get in the thick of things (even if it's not my school involved). i even know all the schools' cheers (well, just the famous ones). =)

btw, can i link your site?

Oo nga eh.. like my friend said. It takes on a different meaning :D and it's being misused by some.

Sure, I don't mind. :) It's full of angst though; it seems I get myself to writing only when I'm down. It might take a turn one of these days, been thinking about it already :) Thanks

kwento ko lang iyung officemate ko na diehard USTE fan.

hala, hindi tinanggal iyung kanyang headband na tiger-style hanggang alas onse ng gabi. tapos sigaw ng sigaw...

"go USTE, go USTE, go, go, go USTE!"

ang OA na nga tignan. mukha na siyang engot.

btw, galing magsulat nung kahuntutan mo ng mga kurokuro ngayon tungkol sa UAAP jen. panalo.

kurokurokuro, thanks for the compliment :) You're only the second person to tell me that. :P I can think of three reasons: 1) Very few people get to read my page. 2) It sucks. 3) The people who do stumble upon it... a) don't like it, b) don't get it, c) choose to remain silent.

Anyway, back to the finals; some tidbits I just really feel like sharing. :))
a) The PhP20 General Admission ticket was the best 20 pesos I've spent so far.
b) There was this streamer at UST's side that really bothered me. Printed on it was, in big bold capital letters: "GOD IS A THOMASIAN." It was just appalling; the utter lack of thought was unimaginable. I'm not even religious at all, but the statement -- it was just wrong, it was so blatantly blasphemous. Why would anyone even think it's permissible to say that? Values. Values. And you wave that in front of the massive crowds of students in Araneta. What about school dignity? UST is a good school, and the people behind this streamer dare stain its name.
/rant mode off

Maybe I'm just overreacting? I don't know. It just feels really wrong.

Jue, my golly?! God is a Thomasian?! Is it even logically verifiable?! Grabe naman yun. I mean, some feminist groups are even contesting that God might be a "she". (but i don't really believe that. Just for the purpose of arguement. hehehe.)

Good thing you got the P20 ticket for it's real price. Scalpers can sell that for 100 bucks especially on championship games or DLSU-ADMU matches.
